Urban Transformation – Magnum Photos Scholarship

Milano PhotoWeek è orgogliosa di presentare dieci borse di studio per una masterclass con il fotografo Magnum Photos Alex Majoli, mirata a sviluppare progetti fotografici che raccontino la trasformazione urbana della città di Milano.
Un progetto di Magnum Photos, con il supporto di BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas in collaborazione con La Triennale Milano, ideato e curato da ArtsFor_Milano

Dal 20 maggio al 7 giugno 2018 a Milano.

Nella tradizione dell’impegno di Magnum Photos per i fotografi emergenti, questa esclusiva occasione darà l’opportunità ai dieci partecipanti selezionati di perfezionare la loro pratica fotografica e la propria autorialità confrontandosi con un fotografo di rilievo e esperienza come Alex Majoli.

La masterclass includerà presentazioni edificanti, revisioni portfolio, discussioni peer-to-peer e la realizzazione di un assegnato in due settimane di shooting, sviluppato in collaborazione con Alex Majoli e i partecipanti della masterclass.

I partecipanti riceveranno un brief a partire dal quale dovranno produrre il loro progetto che verrà alla fine della masterclass mostrato e discusso con Alex Majoli.
Il tema dell’assegnato sarà la trasformazione urbana della città di Milano. Verranno forniti ai partecipanti dei possibili temi da sviluppare con suggerimenti su eventuali storie fotografiche da realizzare durante lo shooting.
Sarà comunque chiesto ai partecipanti di sviluppare racconti fotografici anche a partire dai propri interessi e suggestioni.
Il 7 giugno in un incontro finale aperto al pubblico presso La Triennale Milano, il fotografo Alex Majoli mostrerà, in una proiezione, i racconti visivi sviluppati dai partecipanti durante la masterclass.

Informazioni su Alex Majoli

Alex Majoli (Ravenna, Italia, 1971) è un fotografo italiano. Ha frequentato l’Istituto d’arte di Ravenna.
Il lavoro di Alex Majoli si concentra sulla teatralità della condizione umana.

La carriera di Majoli inizia precocemente nello studio di Casadio e Malanca, ma solo dopo aver fotografato la chiusura del famigerato manicomio sull’isola di Leros, in Grecia, trova eco nella sua forma autoriale, da cui la sua prima monografia intitolata “Leros”.

L’iniziale interesse di Majoli per le teorie di Franco Basaglia, pioniere del moderno concetto di salute mentale e noto per aver abolito gli ospedali psichiatrici in Italia, lo porta a viaggiare in Brasile, dove le teorie Basagliane vengono adottate con entusiasmo.
Nel corso di vent’anni anni Majoli ha fotografato il Paese sudamericano collezionando una serie d’immagini della complessa società brasiliana unite in un progetto tutt’ora in corso chiamato “Tudo bom”.

A cavallo tra gli anni ’90 e 2000 Majoli ha lavorato prevalentemente per l’editoria internazionale. La sua esperienza pluriennale di fotoreporter ha fatto sì che Majoli intuisse la sottile barriera che vive tra la finzione e la realtà dell’esistenza umana, idea già esplorata in letteratura e filosofia da Pirandello a Debord.

Nel rappresentare attraverso le immagini le dinamiche teatrali della vita, in cui le azioni umane sembrano prendere ispirazione dallo spettacolo, Majoli si pone come fotografo provocatore accentuando la drammaticità della routine quotidiana con l’uso di luci artificiali. Le sue immagini diventano scene in cui le persone, attraverso la loro “vita/performance”, si esprimono in quello che poi diventa un non dichiarato set cinematografico o un palcoscenico teatrale.

La linea sottile tra realtà e teatro, documentario e arte, comportamento umano e recitazione è l’esatto attrito che lo affascina e continua vederlo tornare nelle strade e nei luoghi in cui la condizione umana viene messa in discussione. Anche nella più tragica delle miserie trova il teatro, l’orgoglio e soprattutto la magnificenza dello spirito umano.

Urban Transformation – Magnum Photos Scholarship

Milano PhotoWeek is proud to present ten full scholarship in Milan led by Magnum member Alex Majoli and focused on telling the urban transformation of the city of Milan.
A project by Magnum Photos, with the support of BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas, in collaboration with La Triennale Milano, conceived and curated by ArtsFor_.

In the tradition of Magnum Photos’ commitment to emerging photographers, this exclusive full scholarship will give to 10 selected participants a rare opportunity to refine their photographic practice and sense of authorship under the guidance of an outstanding photographer.
The masterclass will incorporate inspirational presentations, portfolio critiques, peer-to-peer discussions and a two weeks shooting assignment developed in collaboration with Alex Majoli and group participants.
Participants will receive a brief and will have to produce new work in response to this brief, showcasing the work for review at the end of the shooting.
The macro-theme of the shooting will be the “urban transformation” of the city of Milan. A list of under-themes will be provided. Participants will be also provided with suggestions of stories and projects to be developed during the shooting, but will also be asked to develop stories by their own basing on the given brief.
As part of this event, Alex Majoli will lead a public talk open to the public on Thursday June 7th evening at La Triennale Milano, where the final projects realized by the participants will be presented in a screening.

About Alex Majoli

Alex Majoli (Ravenna, Italy, 1971) is an Italian photographer. He attended the Art Institute in Ravenna.
Alex majoli’s work focuses on the human condition and the theater within our daily lives.

Majoli’s career started to develop after he went to photograph the closing of the notorious insane asylum on the island of Leros in Greece, which resulted in his first monograph titled “Leros”. This was mainly because of his interest in the theories of Franco Basaglia, a pioneer of the modern concept of mental health, famous for having abolished the psychiatric hospitals in Italy.
Majoli’s early interest in psychiatric care led him to go to Brazil which marked the beginning of his 20 year long, ongoing project called “Tudo Bom”, a compelling body of work about the multi layered, complex country and specifically the extremes found in the darker side of its society.
Throughout the years Majoli has worked as a photojournalist. His many years of experience photographing people in all kinds of circumstances have made Majoli explore the idea of being actors in our own lives. He understands his role as a photographer can make people perform in their own natural setting and therefore he tries to exaggerate this by using artificial light to dramatize an otherwise daily routine. His pictures become scenes from films where people, through their performance, express their own selves in what then becomes a film set or a theater stage. When one looks at these photographs, one can only wonder if this is fact or fiction. The thin line between reality and theater, documentary and art and human behavior and acting is the kind of friction that keeps fascinating him and keeps making him return to the streets and places where the human condition is called into question. Even in the most tragic of miseries he finds the theater, the pride, and above all the magnificence of the human spirit.
He is currently working on a project about the fragmentation and polarization of Europe’s identity as it grapples to come to terms with the realization that it can no longer isolate itself from the crisis unfolding just across the Mediterranean. With this project, Majoli aims to invite the audience to question what is happening with the ideology of Europe as a whole and xenophobia, the refugee crisis and the extreme right wing across the entire continent in specific.
Majoli lives in New York. He is a member of Magnum Photos since 2001 and he is represented by Howard Greenberg Gallery NY.
